It is a common and agonizing dilemma: Filipino diabetics try their best to control their blood sugar, but the temptation to indulge in sumptuous food is too strong.
The Philippines is among the top 15 countries with the highest prevalence of type 2 diabetes in the world. More than 4 million Filipinos are diagnosed diabetics, and many more are unaware they have the disease. A 2008 survey found that almost 85% of Filipino patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus are struggling to achieve their target blood glucose level. Moreover, 3 out of 4 Filipino patients with diabetes are overweight. Being overweight places extra stress on the body in a variety of ways, including the ability to maintain proper blood glucose levels.
The Philippine Association for the Study of Overweight and Obesity (PASOO) and research-based pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca are aiming to address this problem with the launch of a novel cookbook series for Filipino diabetics, “Delicious, Delightful Dishes for People with Diabetes”. The unique cookbook series is the product of the world-class culinary skills of Chef Sau Del Rosario and the scientific expertise of PASOO nutritionists Ms. Sanirose Orbeta and Dr. Celeste Tanchoco.
The first among top local chefs who will work with PASOO nutritionists in the cookbook series, Chef Sau was trained in several Michelin-starred restaurants in France. The Michelin Star is a hallmark of fine dining quality and considered the “Holy Grail” of top restaurants around the world.
“Having diabetes doesn’t mean depriving yourself of good food. This one-of-a-kind cookbook features easy-to-prepare recipes set in a 14-day meal plan that will help Filipino diabetics eat the right food in the right amount, take charge of their diabetes and enjoy life to the fullest,” said PASOO President Dr. Roberto Mirasol.
The recipes were carefully chosen for its flavorful taste and were meticulously tested for being nutritious and diabetic friendly.
“It is a privilege to be part of this journey to wellness and health. In creating these delicious and healthy recipes, I was inspired by my late mother who was a diabetic. I hope that this cookbook will help Filipinos with diabetes to prepare and eat dishes with the right ingredients, in the right portions and cooked with the right methods,” said Chef Sau.
“As an innovation-driven company, AstraZeneca is constantly pushing the boundaries of science to develop effective and creative ways to manage diabetes. A healthy diet is crucial in controlling blood glucose and maintaining optimal weight, which are key factors in preventing the serious complications of diabetes, such as heart attack, stroke and kidney failure,” said Dr. Emman Arca, Associate Medical and Regulatory Affairs Director, AstraZeneca Philippines.
“Delicious, Delightful Dishes for People with Diabetes” are available to patients with type 2 diabetes through the clinics of leading diabetes specialists across the country. For inquiries, please contact PASOO at +63 2 6321533 and +63 2 3599268.
