Developmental disorders are conditions that interrupt normal development in childhood. Examples of developmental disorders include Autism, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD), and mental retardation, among others.
Early diagnosis and holistic, multi-faceted intervention is key to addressing developmental disorders. Unfortunately, few specialists and facilities in the country are dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of developmental disorders. Moreover, the stigma associated with developmental disorders push many parents of children with developmental disorders into denial. Left undiagnosed and unaddressed, developmental disorders can become severely debilitating and prevent children from achieving their full potential and living happy, productive lives.
“Through the establishment of Progress Child Development Center, we aim to help address this unmet need in diagnosing and managing developmental disorders in the Philippines,” says Mr. Marco Protacio, President of Protacio Medical Services, owner and operator of Protacio Hospital, one of the leading healthcare institutions in Parañaque City.
“Our multi-disciplinary team of specialists are dedicated to the early diagnosis and targeted management of developmental disorders,” explains Dr. Rochelle Buenavista-Pacifico, Head of Developmental Pediatrics, Progress Child Development Center. “Brain development is most sensitive and responsive to targeted intervention during the first three years of a child’s life. As such, early diagnosis of developmental disorders is absolutely crucial.”
“With earlier intervention, children with developmental disorders are able to function independently and self-sufficiently as adults and gain a level of personal and occupational independence,” says Dr. Marie Pearl Lei B. Reyes, Consultant Psychiatrist, Progress Child Development Center.
Mr. Protacio, Dr. Pacifico and Dr. Reyes spoke during the media launch of Progress Child Development Center held on September 27, 2016 at the Nichols Airport Hotel in Parañaque City.
Located on the seventh floor of Protacio Hospital, Progress Child Development Center is staffed by leading experts in Psychiatry and the relatively new field of Developmental Pediatrics. It offers a comprehensive and multi-dimensional approach to diagnosing and managing developmental disorders in children. Progress Child Development Center has a topnotch team of specialists who provide a wide range of holistic, multi-disciplinary and fully integrated therapeutic modalities. Its services include Developmental Pediatrics, Child Psychiatry, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, and Special Education (SPED) tutorial services.
According to Dr. Pacifico, early diagnosis enables specialists to design a targeted intervention that takes into account the severity and extent of the disorder, its variety, the natural course that it may take, and ultimately the uniqueness of every child. These factors determine the best treatment options for each child.
Dr. Pacifico underscored the need to promote awareness on developmental disorders in order to reduce the stigma associated with them and encourage more parents with affected children to step forward and seek professional help.
“Our entire medical team and staff work together to help children cope and rise above developmental disorders, empowering them to live happy and productive lives,” says Dr. Pacifico.
In line with its holistic and multi-disciplinary approach, the Progress Child Development Center works closely with the AD/HD Society of the Philippines and Autism Society Philippines (ASP). The AD/HD Society of the Philippines is a parent-based organization committed to supporting individuals with AD/HD, their families, and the professionals who work with them through family empowerment, advocacy, and stakeholder networking. ASP is a non-profit organization comprised of families, teachers, therapists and institutions dedicated to the wellbeing of persons with autism spectrum disorder.
